Using Gallery Remote to batch edit and upload images

This is a set of instructions to help you get started using Gallery Remote.

What is Gallery Remote?

Gallery Remote is a program that you install on your computer, which helps you upload images to Drupal websites (such as energyfarms.net). It's useful because it lets you upload the images in batches, rather than one by one.

Install Gallery Remote

You can download the installer file here: http://www.energyfarms.net/modules/image_pub/gallery_remote_1.5.1-b19.zip

Unzip, and run the installer. Then, start up the program.

Using Gallery Remote

To get started, you'll need to add a gallery URL - ie, tell Gallery Remote which website's gallery you want to connect to.

To add a gallery URL, follow these steps:

1) In Gallery Remote, click on the "Add Gallery URL" button in the top right-hand corner.
2) In the Gallery Remote Preferences window that opens, make sure URLs is selected in the left-hand box. Then click on the "New..." button to add a new URL.
3) In the Gallery Details popup that opens, enter the following information:

  • Alias: (anything you like; something like "Energy Farm Galleries".
  • Username: (your username for the website)
  • Password: (your password for the website)
  • Gallery Type: Standalone
  • Gallery URL: (URL of the website; ie, "http://www.energyfarms.net")

... and then click OK in both popups to save your changes. Now, the gallery you just added will be available from the "Gallery URL" dropdown in the main Gallery Remote screen.

Now that you've added a gallery URL to Gallery Remote, you can connect to that gallery.

To connect to a gallery:

1) Select the gallery you want to connect to from the "Gallery URL" dropdown in the main Gallery Remote screen
2) Click on the "Log In" button

Gallery Remote will "think" for a moment as it logs in; then, if login was successful, you'll see all the Galleries on the website you've selected appear in the "Albums" box on the left-hand side of Gallery Remote.

Once you've connected to a gallery, you can view the images in that gallery, but not edit or remove them. You can also add new images, rotate and caption them, and upload them. As they're uploaded, they'll be automatically resized by the website to a set of preset sizes.

To view images in a gallery:

1) Select the gallery, by clicking on its name in the "Albums" box on the left-hand side of Gallery Remote.
2) Click on the "Fetch pictures already on the server" button on the right-hand side.

Remember, once images are already on the website (ie, uploaded), you can't edit or remove them with Gallery Remote. You'd have to go on to the website, go to the gallery, find the image, and edit it there.

To add images to Gallery Remote:

1) Select the gallery, by clicking on its name in the "Albums" box on the left-hand side of Gallery Remote.
2) You can add images in two ways:
      a) Click on the "Add pictures..." button on the bottom left. In the "Add pictures and/or whole folders" popup, navigate to the image - or folder of images - that you want to add. Select the image or folder, and click on the "Add" button. The images you've selected will appear (as thumbnails) in the middle pane of Gallery Remote.
    OR
      b) Drag-and-drop files into the middle pane of Gallery Remote.
Note that you've now brought the images into Gallery Remote, but you haven't put them on the website yet. You can now resize, rotate and caption them with Gallery Remote if you wish, and upload them onto the server.

To resize, rotate or caption images:

1) In the middle pane of Gallery Remote, click on the image(s) you want to edit. If you want to edit multiple images, hold down "shift" while selecting them.
2) In the left-hand pane, you'll now see the options for operations you can perform on the image(s) you've selected.
    a) Rotate left or right (curved arrow buttons)
    b) Flip horizontal (ie, mirror image) (horizontal arrow button)
    c) Move up/move down (ie, change order in this gallery)
    d) Remove (ie, remove from Gallery Remote - this will not remove the image from the server)

To upload images from Gallery Remote to the website:

Note that you can set Gallery Remote to resize your images before you upload them. This is a good idea if your images are very large - it will save time. Or alternately, you can just upload them as they are, and let the website resize them.

To resize images with Gallery Remote, prior to upload:

1) Select the gallery, by clicking on its name in the "Albums" box on the left-hand side of Gallery Remote. This will let you see settings for this gallery in the right-hand pane.
2) In the "Override upload defaults" section, check the "Resize before upload" checkbox.
3) Click the radio button beside "Force resize to", and select a sensible size from the dropdown box.

Now that you've set that, Gallery Remote will resize your images for you when you upload them.

To upload images:

1) Make sure the correct gallery is selected in the left-hand pane of Gallery Remote.
2) Click on the "Upload pictures" button in the bottom right-hand corner.
The images will vanish from the middle pane as they are uploaded. You can confirm that they uploaded successfully by clicking on the "Fetch pictures already on server" button.

Resizing
The website will automatically take whatever image Gallery Remote gives it, and provide it in different sizes. These sizes vary from website to website - they can be set up by techies (Mack or Zoe). Usually, the sizes will be:
- thumbnail (100px by 100px)
- medium (320px by 320 px)
- preview (640px by 640px)
- original (whatever the original size was)
